Bilingualism / Dwyieithrwydd
Why choose a Welsh education?
One of the main benefits, is that children become proficient in Welsh through being immersed in the language by the end of secondary school. This can be a real asset in the Welsh job market, where more opportunities are open to Welsh speakers.
There are also educational benefits in learning two languages, with research showing that it helps develop cognitive skills. Children in Wales who fully immerse themselves in the learning of Cymraeg often have superior writing skills and find it easier to learn other languages as they get older, due to their grounding in two languages.
As a cluster of schools on the border of England and Wales, Chepstow Cluster believes that it is of utmost importance to use and promote the Welsh language and Cymreictod (Welshness). We want our learners to confidently learn and use the Welsh language so that it becomes part of their everyday lives. We want our learners to thrive in Welsh language-rich environments, where they become ambitious and capable learners who can communicate effectively, reading and writing in Welsh, English and other additional languages.
Our vision can be summed up in five words:
- Communicate
- Confidence
- Cymreictod
- Cynefin
- Challenge
At Ysgol Cas-gwent we are very proud of our use of the Welsh language. We have a Cymdeithas Gymraeg that help to organise events and to gain awards, such as our Bronze Siarter Iaith award. We are currently working on our Silver award. Angharad Jones is currently Head of our Welsh Department and Bilingualism. She visits schools in the cluster and works with other staff in the cluster to develop Cymraeg.
